PRINTING PROBLEMS AND PROCESS INSTABILITY
Any printing process carries variables that make its output unstable and unequal from job to job and from time to time. Process variations include:
- dot reproduction and dot gain (TVI)
- gray balance
- paper properties inside the same paper type
- ink properties even from the same supplier
- ambiant temperature and humidity
REQUIREMENTS OF QUALITY CONTROL AND ASSURANCE ON THE PRESS
Many printers have implemented or considered implementing quality control and assurance in their pressroom in line with their internal quality management system and practices. This implementation requires a continuous and day to day follow- up of process parameters especially the above indicated variables. This tedious and time consuming work also carries its share of possible uncertainties and errors especially when done manually. In most printshops this work can simply not be done due to lack of time and necessary technical resources.
LIMITATIONS OF MANUAL SYSTEMS AND OPERATIONS
Hand-held measuring devices are not robust enough for a reliable and accurate work in the pressroom on a daily basis.
Moreover:
- manual measurements represent a source of possible errors
- measuring a single sheet or few sheets can not give an accurate representation of
- a printing process color and dot gain reproduction
- many freeware and commercial software contain inaccurate dot gain and dot
- gain correction calculation algorythms.
These sources or errors can add-up resulting in inaccuracies that alone can exceed ISO TVI tolerances.
RELIABLE SOLUTION TO ADOPT ISO 12647
Print Standardizer was designed to overcome all the constraints of ISO 12647 implementation in the presroom. It is easy to install and to set thanks to its embedded ISO compliant presets that rule out any error or misunderstanding of the software settings. Moreover, Print Standardizer package includes 2 days installation and training provided by the best Alwan, X-Rite or KEE Consultant expert available in your area.
As soon as it is installed, Print Standardizer will allow you to:
- use Print Standardizer 2 mm control strip (below) or your usual productiion strip as
long as it contains solids and 2 tints per primary
- print to ISO 12647 CMYK solids thanks to X-Rite Intellitrax™ automation and
software guidance.
The rest is done automatically for you by Alwan Dynamic PressCalibration™ technology :
- import of all ITX measurements
- sorting of measurments per press and paper type
- analysis and fi ltering of measurements for an optmized data base
- calculation of average press/paper Dot Gain and DG correction
- continuous update of dot gain correction: after each job, daily, weekly or monthly
- application of updated DGC in Print Standardizer software
- export DGC for production RIPs using supported fi le formats
- continuous tracking and correction of press behavior leading to ISO 12647 matching in daily production.
BECOME ISO 12647 COMPLIANT AND PROVE IT!
Thanks to Print Standardizer data base and reporting system you will be able to have print assessment and cercertification reports according to ISO 12647 for sample
sheets or for complete jobs. Print Standardizer detailed reports are in conformance with Ugra, Fogra and ISO audit bodies requirements.

Digital Distributors, South Africa’s leading suppliers of colour management and process control solutions that assist printers in achieving ISO 12647 compliance, displayed some of the most exciting new technologies available to the print industry at Print Expo 2009.
Technical Director of Digital Distributors, John Panton, commented on this year’s Print Expo: “Digital Distributors brought great new technology to the market with some of our solutions that were on display for the first time in South Africa, including:
• Alwan Print Standardizer
• Serendipity Veripress
• InkZone solutions from Digital Information Systems
• EFI’s Web Control Centre and Proofing
• Bodoni PressSign Pro
• Xrite’s - Latest process control tools
“We did not see too much other new print technology from an offset perspective, although we were running a busy stall and couldn’t look around too much. Kemtek had the Screen Truepress Jet on show, which is very impressive.
“For the duration of the show, our Ink Zone’s Ink key Preset and closed loop feedback for Ink key adjustment attracted most attention at our stand. This can be used on almost any offset press at very affordable prices. Veripress’s on-press soft proofing also proved very interesting to our visitors at the Expo....
