Recently our highly respected industry peers at X-Rite Pantone had the task of assisting a North American print company – Cedar Graphics with their Pantone Printer Certification.
President of Cedar Graphics, Michael Clark had beforehand already been performing wonderfully with his team but upon hearing more and more about the efficiency garnered from this certification he grew all the more interested:
“As a trade printer, you must learn to be competitive. The more I learned about the Pantone Certified Printer program and how it could help streamline our processes and make them more consistent, the more interested I became.”
Clark’s interest was peaked and was ready to take his workforce efficiency to the Pantone level, but the challenge was now finding the solution to doing this. He approached an X-Rite Pantone expert and their internal team to complete this process of becoming a Pantone Certified Printed, adding this prestigious accolade to his and Cedar Graphics already impressive array of other certifications including G7, FSC and SFI.
The results were monumental. The outside view that X-Rite Pantone brought to the Pantone Certified Printer program enabled Cedar Graphics to ensure consistent operations from each of their departments to the next, as well as shift to shift, from ink room through prepress and lastly the press room. “Everyone is now speaking the same language, and we are much more efficient as a result.” Clark went on to say. Finally, the president of Cedar Graphics had this to say about the process and and how it has since changed his efficiency and workflow as well as output:
“There is a lot of pressure in this business to get things done. Prior to 2005 we had 2 weeks to produce. We are lucky we have 5 days and most want it in 3 days. Some want it in hours! If I have 5 days and something goes wrong 20% of my time is lost. It went out the window. Something in the process broke and we lost valuable time. Now I have to pay overtime and all the extra work to get the job out. The deadline did not change……If the PANTONE Certified Printer Program can help avoid that with SOPs I don’t lose that 20% of the schedule and I don’t have to pay overtime and make up the lost time. We take pride in not being late and this helped unlock potential in the company.”
